The horse is one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac and holds a distinctive place in traditional Chinese culture. 2026 marks the Year of the Horse, which also happens to be my own zodiac year.

This project explores the horse as a traditional Chinese cultural image through narrative illustration. Drawing on its symbolic associations with movement, vitality and freedom, I reimagine the familiar zodiac animal through a contemporary visual language.

The illustrations were created using monoprint, a printmaking process that produces unique, one-of-a-kind impressions. The unpredictability of the medium allows variations in texture, layering and mark-making to become part of the visual narrative, creating a sense of movement and spontaneity within the work.
